Leaving a Mark on Super Bowl LVI

The Olympics and Super Bowl LVI occurring within the last two weeks have kept the sports world busy. My last post talked about the best and worst moments of the Olympics to that point. I decided to continue in this direction but from a different perspective. This perspective will highlight parts of the evening, but not the moments on the field- the ads of course! Super Bowl LVI’s ads stole the show with their best entertainment as well as a first! Here are some of my favorite ads of the evening:

a

Nissan’s “Thrill Driver” with Eugene Levy, Brie Larson, Dave Bautista, and Catherine O’Hara took the creative direction of choosing fan favorites. This grasped the attention of those watching by having an action-packed commercial with Eugene Levy as the face of Nissan to show the “thrill.” Someone like Eugene Levy, who has a fanbase both young and old, is a great way to have them reach a larger audience and encourage them to join the “thrill.” The action, graphics, and comedic effect made the ad stand out.

Lay’s “Golden Memories” with Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen is another great example of using fan favorites to draw the attention of those watching. Seeing fan-favorites, especially dynamic duos like Paul and Seth who are coming on 20 years of friendship, how they interact with each other and the comedic relief they bring to the table made me feel as if I wasn’t even watching a commercial. This duo was assigned to portray two friends bonding over a bag of chips, which was exactly what they delivered. This commercial is engaging, creative, funny, and drives the idea of Lays without a harsh delivery.

The Kia “Robo Dog” commercial with Sam Page mainly stood out to me for its “cuteness factor.” “Robo Dog” was cute enough to capture the attention of those watching, show him finding his forever home, and then seeing that that home is in a 2022 Kia EV6. The dog made not one but two appearances to showcase the new Kia! This use of the “cuteness factor” to draw them into a story and then sell them the vehicle was a strategic storyline move that I think was pretty efficient and, overall, an entertaining commercial to watch.

The Bud Light Seltzer commercial “Land of Loud Flavors” revealed their new Hard Soda grasped my attention and kept me engaged with the electric atmosphere of the commercial alone. The presence of Guy Fieri only made the commercial more electric and made me want to try one to see if it lived up to the hype. A fun night with an electric atmosphere, where a Hard Soda would most likely be consumed, is the perfect way to reach the target audience.

Lastly, I will end with my favorite commercial that aired during the Super Bowl: the Alexa commercial with Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson. Many have long awaited the time when Colin and Scarlett would be on the screen together and it appears their wish was finally granted. Getting a glimpse of their relationship first-hand excited fans, grasped their attention, and made the ad genuinely enjoyable. This, along with the other ads, shows the power of having faces on the screen that people recognize and love. The sheer entertainment they brought to the table and being some of my favorite public figures made this commercial my #1!

In other news, Super Bowl LVI revealed a first as they featured cryptocurrency ads for the first time. These ads were an attempt to try and win over mainstream customers and show them how to embrace digital currency. Critics have argued that none of the cryptocurrency commercials sold people on anything specific, only the simple act of spending money on crypto. However, these ads just go to show the impact cryptocurrency has on the world today. Even with each of them paying $6.5 million for the ad, they still are expected to significantly surpass the cost of the ad as cryptocurrency continues to take the world by storm.
